Luebke, Frederick C., Frances W. Kaye & Gary E. Moulton, eds., Mapping the North American Plains: Essays in the History of Cartography. Norman & London: University of Oklahoma Press, 1987. ISBN 0-8061-2044-4. 28x2lcm., xiv, 239pp., illustrated, hard cover. (Norman, OK 73019)

This work contains eleven essays by various authors.  Perhaps of most interest here are Exploratory Mapping of the Great Plains before 1800, Mapping the Missouri River through the Great Plains, and Practical Military Geographers and Mappers of the Trans-Missouri West 1820-1860.  Also interesting to me was Indian Maps: Their Place in the History of Plains Cartography.  There are numerous illustrations.  An exhibition catalog at the end describes numerous maps, ranging from Münster's America and Zaltieri's North America to Red Horse's manuscript map of Custer's Last Stand.  Americana dealers and collectors should find this a valuable work.
