Meurer, Peter H., Atlantes Colonienses: Die Kölner Schule der Atlaskartographie 1570-1610. Bad Neustadt: Dietrich Pfaehler, 1988. ISBN 3-922923-33-X. 32x24cm., 245pp., illustrated, cloth. (Verlag Dietrich Pfaehler, Berliner Strasse 37, 8740 Bad Neustadt a.d. Saale, West Germany, DM 198.00).

As might be guessed from the title, this is very similar to Atlantes Neerlandici, though restricted to atlases published in Cologne in the indicated time span.  Still, quite a few interesting atlases are included, most notably those of Quad and Metellus.  Also included, among others, are Cologne editions of works by Magini, Botero, and Christiaan van Adrichem.  Not included are Civitates Orbis Terrarum and Hogenberg's Geschichtsblätter.  The book is substantially more detailed than Atlantes Neerlandici.  There is a lengthy introductory section, and each author is discussed in detail.  Cartographic sources are also discussed at some length.  A number of maps are illustrated, the most familiar being Quad's world, North America, and south pole.  This important work is scholarly, useful, and interesting, that most rare triumvirate, and is a model for works of its type.
