Laor, E., Maps of the Holy Land: Cartobibliography of Printed Maps, 1475-1900. New York: Alan R. Liss, Inc. and Amsterdam: Meridian Publishing Co., 1986. ISBN 0-8451-1705 25x30cm., xx, 201pp., illustrated, cloth. (41 E. 11th St., New York, NY 10003)

This is destined to become the standard bibliography for Holy Land maps.  A total of 1185 maps of the Holy Land and Jerusalem are listed.  Each listing gives title, publisher:, year of publication, dimensions, and comments.  Only selected items arc illustrated, but the selection is good, and the reproductions are well done, some in color.  Obviously, with so many entries, coverage is excellent, especially for maps printed in Hebrew, for which there is a special section. Less good is coverage of the 19th-centurv, but covering all those maps, most of which are of little significance, would have a diluting effect.  The only important omission I noticed was Pietro Coppo's map, but there is only one copy of that anyway.  My only complaint is that a title index would be helpful in identifying loose copies without names.  At the end there is an excellent listing of mapmakers, giving biographical and other data.  This work is of course mandatory for Holy Land specialists, and for general dealers who sell occasional Holy Land maps.  I suspect that those whose interests are more general would also find much of interest in this book.
