Martin, James C. and Robert Sidney Martin, Maps of Texas and the Southwest, 1513-1900. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1984. ISBN 0-8263-0741-8. 23x30cm., x, 174pp., illustrated, cloth. (Albuquerque, NM 87131, $50.00)

Although prepared as an exhibition catalog this book serves as an excellent reference on the mapping of the Southwest.  There are eight color and fifty monochrome plates, the latter being accompanied by descriptive essays.  Most maps will be quite familiar to dealers and collectors, including the Ortelius America, and maps of North America by Jansson and Coronelli.  The 19th century is also well represented, with maps by Melish, Disturnell, and the like.  The reproductions are of excellent quality.  The book is in oblong format, and enjoyable to browse slowly.  Some introductory essays on mapmaking and the history of the region supplement  the descriptions of the exhibits.
