Mackal, Roy P., A Living Dinosaur?  In Search of Mokele-Mbembe. 1987, Leiden: E.J. Brill, ISBN 90-04-08543-2. 24x16cm., xviii, 340pp., illustrated, cloth.

This year's piece of resistance is a remarkable travel book written by a cryptozoologist investigating reports of a dinosaur-like creature in the swampy interior of The People's Republic of the Congo, a.k.a. Congo Brazzaville.  Reports of strange giant animals have been filtering out of this area since the 1776 publication of Histoire de Loango, Kakongo, et Autres Royaumes d’Afrique.  More recent accounts come from the famous German animal collector, Carl Hagenbeck.  The region involved is so remote that U.S. Defense Mapping Agency maps leave the area blank white.  An excellent antidote for those who think the world is well-explored, this hair-raising account chronicles the author's struggles through some of the world's most inhospitable terrain.  At every turn, the explorers faced unspeakable horrors, rare tropical diseases, large predators, venomous reptiles, and most hideous of all, Marxist bureaucrats.  This book is available in the U.S. from (where else?) Strange Bookshop, P.O. Box 2246, Rockville, MD, 20847 for $24.95 plus $1.50 shipping.
