Tooley, R.V., Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers: Supplement. New York: Alan R. Liss, Inc., and Amsterdam: Meridian Publishing Co., 1985. ISBN 0-8451-1703-3. 25x18cm., x, 116pp., illustrated, cloth. (41 East 11th St., New York, NY 10003, $19.50)

Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers is of course quite familiar to collectors and dealers. Although that volume contained 21,450 entries, inevitably some names were overlooked.  This supplement provides an additional 4000 or so entries.  Most of the new cartographers are fair obscure.  There are a few anomalies. George Cram and John Reid mysteriously appear in both editions.  Alphabetization is a bit idiosyncratic. One finds St. Jerome between Stigliola and Stobo!  The supplement often lists important maps or atlases by the various mapmakers, but frequently omits the city where the mapmaker published.  Nevertheless, dealers will find the supplement useful.  Some dealers emphasize the rarity of a particular map in their catalogs by using the phrase "not in Tooley." Those dealers had better buy the Supplement if they intend to continue using that phrase.
