Javorski, Mary, The Canadian West Discovered, an Exhibition of Printed Maps from the 16th to Early 20th Centuries. Calgary: Glenbow Museum, 1983. ISBN 0-919224-33-4. 23x30 cm., 75 pp., paper. (130-9 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta T2G OP3, Canada, $14.95 Canadian)

This exhibition catalog completes a project begun by the late Coolie Verner.  The catalog illustrates 50 maps showing the Canadian West.  Some, like the Purchas/Briggs North America and the Jaillot North America, will be familiar to the collector.  A 1938 Canadian airmail route map may not be quite so familiar.  An introductory essay on the exploration of western Canada and essays accompanying each map are informative and interesting.  I do not agree that the Purchas/Briggs map is "sedate" because "English map engraving was in its infancy." The engraver of that map previously engraved a beautiful version of the Boazio Ireland.  The book is finely produced, although the black-and-white illustrations in some cases should have been reproduced with higher contrast.  A subsidy from the Canada Council has resulted in a bargain that no sane collector of Canadian maps should pass up.
