Jolly, David C., Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800. Brookline: David C. Jolly, 1989. ISBN 0-91177S-50-1. 23x15cm., viii, 120pp., paper. (P.O. Box 931, Brookline, MA 02146).

I finally got tired of trying to look up maps from Gentleman’s Magazine and London Magazine in Phillips' Maps.  That work is indispensable, but there is no title index, and one must guess what geographical region an item will be found under.  Phillips' Maps also lacks quite a few items, even from the commoner periodicals.  Anyway, I thought it would be a good idea to make a listing of these maps once and for all.  There are over 450 entries, many from better-known periodicals such as the two just mentioned, and Universal Magazine, Political Magazine, and Scots Magazine.  Many others are from more obscure periodicals, such as Pennsylvania Magazine, Grand Magazine of Universal Intelligence and Imperial Magazine.  Information given includes the exact title, exact imprint or engraver's signature, dimensions, where the item appeared, whether coloring is called for, and reference works where the map is mentioned.  The most useful feature is a title index.  Many of these maps lack any publisher's imprint or engraver's signature, and the title index greatly speeds looking them up.  Further details are given at the end of this volume.
