This is a handy reference for anyone planning to use the National Map Collection for research.  There is an overall summary of purpose, a list of services, and a description of the holdings.  This last section highlights some of the more famous holdings.  Not all holdings are old.  For example, there is a 200,000 item air photo section, and about 150,000 foreign maps after 1900.
