Title: De Stadt Antiochie in Syrie aan den Orontes
This copper engraving is from Calmet's encyclopaedic dictionary on all aspects of the history, geography and culture of the Bible and Biblical times. The engraving shows a bird's-eye view of the ancient walled city of Antioch on the Orontes, Syria, as it appeared in 1630. Antioch was the third largest city in the Greco-Roman world, behind Rome and Alexandria. Today Antioch is known as Hatay (Antakya) in Turkey.     (id:252755/145-665A)
